Happy Lunar New Year!

In celebration of the Lunar New Year, our teammate Leah He shared a few facts about the celebration and the Year of the Tiger! The holiday is filled with rich culture and tradition that centers around “the hope for good fortune and prosperity.” Read more below.

The Chinese Lunar New Year is upon us again. This is the holiday that's celebrated by almost two billion people across the world, also known as Spring Festival. It is celebrated in Chinese communities but also in other Asian countries, including Vietnam and South Korea.

The Lunar New Year date is different each year and is dependent upon one thing: the cycles of the moon. The lunisolar calendar tracks the phases of the sun and moon, in contrast to the commonly used Gregorian calendar which does not.

We’re in the Year of the Tiger - The Chinese word for Tiger ("Hû" in Mandarin) is also used to describe positive vibes. The pronunciation for 'Tiger' in Mandarin and many other dialects is 'Hû', this pronunciation is similar to the "Who" in English. We may say "I wish you good luck in the year of Tiger” (Hû Nián Dà Jí/虎年大吉 in Mandarin), or "Good luck for the year of Tiger" (Hû Nián Rú Yì /虎年如意 in Mandarin).

Good luck in the Year of the Tiger!!!🐯🐯🐯
