WayUp Hosts Webinar on Equitable Hiring for Job Candidates With Disabilities

One of the most frequent questions we receive — and try to answer at Holistic — is “Who’s doing it well?” It’s always been really informative to hear the good ideas others have. After all, as we say, there’s no IP in inclusion. This feature will highlight creative ideas from other companies. Check out the whole list here or submit your own suggestion below.

What does an equitable hiring process look like, what does it mean, and how does it engage/improve/excite future employees? The first and arguably one of the most important steps in the DEI journey is creating an inclusive and diverse team that embodies your company’s values. Recently, Jessie Vaccaro, Senior Director of Customer Success at WayUp co-hosted a webinar on improving your company’s recruiting process to be more accessible to candidates with disabilities. During the webinar, the team did a deep dive into what falls under the disability umbrella, the way corporate America handles it, and ways to rise above with actionable methods to be more equitable. It’s always exciting to see the various ways that companies not only implement change within their spaces but share those same successful practices with the community. What’s the big idea 💡:  Making the hiring process more accessible to candidates with disabilities creates an opportunity to cultivate a more diverse and inclusive and diverse team. WayUp cohosted a webinar with Dave Ong, Senior Director of Talent Acquisitions at Maximus, and Bruce Soltys, Assistant VP of Talent Acquisitions at Travelers. The group tackled topics such as:

  • Candidate Attraction: “How can you intentionally attract candidates with disabilities and ensure there is equity as they move through your process.”

  • Interviewing and accommodations: “The “front door” to your company and many interview processes are not built for someone who is disabled.”

  • Onboarding & Retention: “What do support structures look like for new hires and current employees.”

  • Actionable Ways to Increase Equity: “What resources have been most helpful to your teams as they work towards a more accessible and inclusive process?”

Why it Works: When talking about making space for marginalized communities, disability is often looked over because of the various–and many times invisible–ways it shows up. This webinar allowed individuals with diverse perspectives to discuss their personal realities of disability in the workplace and how it affects everyone.

Not So Hidden Value: It’s accessible for anyone at any time to digest at your own pace. Promptly before International Disabilities Day and during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, WayUp made this resource to shine light on a often unseen topic.
